Canadian Youth Sailing Squad for 2020 Announced

Sail Canada has nominated the names of the athletes who have qualified for the Canadian Youth Sailing Squad for 2020. They association got support from their provincial clubs, support staff, Canadian clubs, and coaches for getting the names for the sailing squad. Each sailor had to attend one of the 9 Talent ID Camps that were held in every region which was mandatory to qualify for the squad of Canada. Over 186 sailors from different parts of Canada got attracted to this opportunity.

45 out of the 186 that tried out their luck were given the invitation for attending the trials camp for the Youth Sailing Squad of Canada 2020. The camps were held from January 1st to 7th in Florida’s Clearwater. 33 sailors got selected from these camps who have been nominated for the squad. Each of the sailors who have been selected will now get the chance to assess and also commit to some of their programs according to the guidance that has been given by the performance team of Sail Canada. The athlete will be formally selected for the squad only after receiving the written commitment.

Some of the commitments that are necessary for the sailors include competing in at least one event of Europe take part in Class World Championships that are appropriate to their age, and attend the Sailing Team and Development Squad Camp in Canada to be held in October 2020. The athletes were assessed on their talents, skills, and compatibility with a particular sailing class in which they are involved currently. Mike Milner who is the Director for High Performance at Sail Canada said that the organization has committed to investing in young sailors who can perform well and the Canadian Youth Sailing Squad 2020 is just the beginning of our long term strategy in performances that are set to be implemented in the coming two years.
